Before we talk about the best travel apps for Australia you should know that this page may contain affiliates. However, I will never recommend resources that I do not find helpful or useful to myself. For more information on what this means please see my Disclaimers and Policies page.
I cannot recommend travelling Australian in a van enough. We purchased our van in Sydney at the very start of our year here and despite a few bumps along the way, we have never looked back.
Travelling in a van gives you so much freedom and saves some money on accommodation. While I would say that finding free campsites was harder than I expected there are still plenty around.
These are the apps that I have found the most helpful for finding my way around Australia.
The Travel Apps I Could Not Have Travelled Australia Without:
Surviving Long Drives Travel Apps for Australia:
- MAPS.ME – Offline Map & Nav – MY COM Australia isn’t known for having the best cell phone service. This means that there will be times where you can’t just quickly google the best route. However, with Maps. Me, if you download the map for the region you will be able to access it offline. It will even show you the distance to
- Google Maps – Transit & Food – Google LLC I don’t know how to get anywhere in another country without Google Maps.
- Spotify: You will need good music for those long drives. I have Spotify Premium and have a ton of playlists downloaded to suit my every musical mood.
- Apple Podcasts: Another way of breaking up long drives and learning a few things are podcasts. For every topic that interests you, I’m sure that there is at least one podcast on the subject.
Travel Apps for Accommodations in Australia:
- CamperMate: Campermate is how I’ve found all of my free campsites around Australia! It is simple to use and gives a lot of information about the site. Sometimes, it isn’t always super up to date.
- Airbnb: I stayed in a few Airbnbs during my time in Australia.
- Hostelworld: Book Hostel Rooms – Web Reservations International There were a few times when we hit a big city where it was cheaper to for two to stay in a hostel than it was to stay in a caravan park. Unfortunately, free campsites aren’t really a thing near cities.
Honourable Mention: WikiCamps Australia – I found this app to be less useful than CamperMate but it can be nice to have two options.
Day-to-Day Life:
- Commonwealth Bank: Commonwealth was the bank that we chose for our time in Australia. They offer an easy to use app, which helped keep me on track with my spending.
- Telstra: Telstra is our Australian phone provider. We chose them because they are known for having the best service in smaller communities. Maybe it’s because I’m from Canada but I love reviewing my data usage for the month. I can quickly do this with the Telstra app and I can quickly pay our phone bill.
- Uber: Uber is readily available in all Australian major cities. There is even Uber Pool in Melbourne!
- WhatsApp Messenger: I’ve been using Whatsapp to keep in touch with international friends for years.
