Moving abroad is lovely but begs the question, how do I keep in touch with what is going back home? A fortunate side effect of our social media-based culture is that there are now tons of ways to stay connected. Here are the apps that I will be using to stay in touch with my family and friends while I’m away. It is impossible to keep in touch with everything at home. You will be in a different time zone and not everything is that important anyway. That being said, it is important to set up at least one channel where the people closest to you can track you down, just in case. These are some apps which lots of people may already have, making the transition easier. However, you may have to ask some people to download at least one of these. Commit to downloading an app before leaving because who knows what your Wifi situation will be once you land (It could be too unreliable to download anything) and you will want to let your people know that you arrived safely.

My Top 5 Phone Apps
- WhatsApp Messenger – WhatsApp Inc.– My favourite app to keep in touch is Whatsapp. I have used it to seamlessly keep in touch with friends all across the world. I barely notice a difference between texting and utilizing this app. Plus, it is fairly common so you may not even have to ask friends to download it.
- Messenger – Facebook, Inc.– This app is not necessarily my go-to; however, almost anyone that I might want to keep in touch with has it. So, this app will be use frequently on my trips. My significant other uses this app to keep in touch with family members who do not live in the country.
- FaceTime – Apple– I am a diehard Apple product woman, luckily, many people in my life are too. I prefer Facetime over Skype because a lot of my people use iPhones or Macs anyway.
- Skype for iPhone – Skype Communications is of course an option. This is useful for those who are not Apple people.
- Viber Messenger: Chats & Calls– This app is very similar to Whatsapp but, I find less people have it making it an option but not necessarily the strongest option.
Bonus: Snapchat may be going out of style; however, I love to use their group chats to keep in touch with friends who are a mixture of iPhones and who knows what.
Try not to stress out too much about keeping up with everything. You are meant to be enjoying yourself and stressing about what the people at home are doing on a daily business can lead to homesickness.
