I know, you’re young, you’re invincible, nothing ever goes wrong on your trips. Why would you need travel insurance?
Well, sometimes things do go horribly awry. Travel insurance is your safety net. It’s that thing you hope to never need but will be so grateful to have if you do. Trust me, I know that when I’m trying to travel on a budget it feels like throwing money away. But one thing I’ve learned in life is to always prepare for the worst and hope for the best.
Fun Fact:
One of my front teeth is fake. I clumsily hit myself in the face with a chair. I was rushing to get back to a meeting at my old job and BAM! While this didn’t happen on a trip, it did happen the day before I was meant to go to Arizona. I don’t know if you have ever had to get emergency dental work done but it is expensive. Crowns are not cheap, let me tell you. I got lucky, my dentist was able to fit me in within the hour and made a decent enough fake tooth to get me through until my crown was ready. But it hurt! And it slowed me down on my trip. My fake tooth is sensitive to cold. If it had happened on a trip it would have ruined it!
Travel insurance can cover emergency dental. If I can break a tooth accidentally at home, imagine what I could do on a trip.
Medical expenses are very costly. Especially in some countries. Especially if you have gone somewhere remote where the nearest medical facility might be hours away. Or if you need to be air lifted. Not only that, where would you go if you needed medical attention?
What will you do if the airline loses your baggage? Do you really want to buy new clothes on your own dime? I doubt it. Unless, you’re like me and enjoy shopping anyway.
What about your family at home? Or if you have to cancel a trip.
5 Reasons to Get Travel Insurance
- Life is unpredictable, you might hit yourself in the face with a chair.
- Medical expenses are very costly.
- Lost baggage. It happens. There is nothing you can do about the reliability of airlines.
- If something happens at home and you have to cut your trip short. Travel insurance can help cover the costs.
- If you have just spent all of your galleons, sickles, and knits on a trip but then you get sick and have to cancel. Travel insurance can sometimes help. Given that you booked it before you got sick.
Before purchasing travel insurance make sure to read the policies wording and description of coverage. This will help you determine if the policy is right for you. Different policies can cover different things. Think about your needs and what might work best for you.
Where to Get Travel Insurance?
So you’re hopefully sold on travel insurance. If not, WHY?
World Nomads is my preferred travel insurance. I have used them to go France, Egypt, Indonesia, Peru, Ecuador, and Australia. All of my coverage filled my needs. While in Australia, I ended up with a UTI. There is a simple fix, you go to the doctor and get a prescription. But, there is no way of curing them on your own and if you do not go, it will get worse. At home, I know where my doctor is and could get it cleared up in a couple of days.
In Australia, I debated calling for a few days until the discomfort became too real. Once I finally decided to call World Nomads for help, I was at a doctor’s office in a matter of hours. The process was so simple. They took down all of my information, policy number, symptoms, and location. A representative then called me back and emailed me a list of doctors’ offices in my area. The representative walked me through every step of the process.
I did have to pay for the expense up front, fortunately it was small, and then submit paperwork to get reimbursed. World Nomads made the situation such a breeze. I think that I would have struggled a bit harder to find medical attention had a list not been provided for me.
The only time I wouldn’t get insurance is if I’m travelling within Canada (My home country). World Nomads can be purchased online making it easy to get access to it.
